Sterilization Methods for Medical-Grade Paper Towels: A Procurement Guide

2026-08-07

Medical-grade paper towels used in operating rooms, ICUs, and CSSD are not ordinary paper. They are sterile consumables, and the sterilization method decides where they can be used. Meidi Medical runs four sterilization processes on separate production lines. This guide explains how each works and which departments they fit.

The four sterilization methods

1. High-temperature steam + UV

Process: 450°C high-pressure steam combined with ultraviolet, applied on dedicated lines.

Cost: lowest of the four, with the fastest turnaround.

Best for: CSSD, operating rooms, and general clean zones where throughput matters more than absolute sterility.

2. Ethylene oxide (EO)

Process: low-temperature gas sterilization that does not damage fiber.

Assurance: SAL 10⁻⁶ (sterility assurance level).

Best for: operating rooms, ICUs, and aseptic preparation rooms where "absolutely sterile" is the requirement.

3. Electron-beam irradiation

Process: high-energy electron beam, physical sterilization at room temperature.

Residue: zero chemical residue, usable immediately after treatment with no aeration wait.

Best for: hemodialysis centers, neonatal units, allergy-sensitive departments, and biology labs.

4. Quaternary ammonium (quat) antimicrobial

Process: proprietary quat treatment bonded into the sheet.

Duration: continues inhibiting bacteria for over 365 days after the pack is opened.

Best for: departments that dispense frequently and store product long term.

Match the method to the department

  • CSSD and high-volume OR: high-temperature + UV (cost and speed)
  • OR, ICU, aseptic prep: EO (absolute sterility, fiber-safe)
  • Neonatal, dialysis, allergy: irradiation (zero residue)
  • Long storage, high frequency: quat (365-day protection)

One standard across all four

All four lines hold Meidi's internal bacterial limit at under 5 CFU/g, 120 times stricter than China's national standard of under 600 CFU/g. Every batch ships with testing and sterilization reports on request.

FAQ

Which sterilization is best for a hospital operating room?

EO is the common choice for operating rooms because it reaches SAL 10⁻⁶ without damaging the fiber. High-temperature + UV is used where cost and turnaround dominate.

Does irradiation leave chemical residue?

No. Electron-beam irradiation is physical sterilization at room temperature with zero chemical residue, which is why it is used in neonatal and dialysis settings.

What does "SAL 10⁻⁶" mean?

Sterility Assurance Level of one in a million. It is the probability that a sterilized unit still carries a viable organism.

Can one supplier provide all four methods?

Yes. Meidi Medical runs four independent sterilization lines and can supply any of them, including mixed batches for different departments.

Do irradiated or EO products need a waiting period before use?

No. Meidi's process is sterilize-and-use-immediately, with no aeration or resolution wait, which shortens lead time.
