Why We Decided to Build a ultrasound coupling gel wipes

At the 2018 Canton Fair, a Nigerian distributor walked up to our booth holding a plastic bag filled with ultrasound wipes. Each sheet had tiny black specks embedded in the paper. He asked: "Can you make one that's clean?"

Over the following years, we heard versions of the same question from hospitals, distributors, and OEM brands across three continents. The complaints boiled down to three things nobody in the market was fixing:

Problem one — lint and residue.

A significant share of ultrasound wipes on the market uses recycled pulp or short-fiber wood pulp. It's cheap to produce, but the paper sheds. Tiny white particles stick to the probe lens after wiping, forcing sonographers to clean again — ten seconds here, ten seconds there, all day. Worse, paper debris can scratch probe surfaces over time. These probes cost more than a car.

Problem two — nobody shows you their bacterial numbers.

Most manufacturers quote the national standard: total bacterial count ≤ 600 CFU/g. That sounds fine on paper until you remember this sheet touches a patient's skin and a six-figure imaging device in the same moment. Six hundred is a generous ceiling. What hospitals actually need is orders of magnitude lower. But tightening that number means upgrading an entire production line. Most factories won't do it.

Problem three — one wipe does not fit all.

A health screening center processing 300 people before noon has different needs than a hospital ultrasound department seeing 40 scheduled patients. A rural clinic with a tight budget is different from a private OB/GYN practice. Yet the market largely offered a handful of sizes with no thought to usage patterns. Bigger or smaller — that was the full range.

Those three frustrations defined the next six years of our product development.

From One Sheet to Four Lines

The first version we made is now the 375g Standard. 250×300mm, 4-ply, 62.5 gsm. The single requirement we set: zero lint.

Lint comes from short fibers. So from day one we locked in two rules: 100% virgin wood pulp only, and every sheet produced inside a GMP Class 100,000 cleanroom — the same facility where we make postpartum care products. Quality control happens on the production line, not after. Every 85th pack gets pulled for bacterial count and tensile strength testing on the spot. Our internal standard is under 5 CFU/g — more than 100 times stricter than the national requirement.

The 375g sold well. Then a vice director from a health screening chain called. "Paper's good. Too small. We change packs a dozen times a day during peak season. Can you make a bigger one?"

That became the 800g High-Volume. Still 220×240mm, still 4-ply, but 800 grams to a pack. The design wasn't about stuffing more sheets into a bag. It was about dialing in the grammage to exactly the point where a single sheet does the job, and a single pack lasts through the morning rush. The same chain later told us consumable changeovers during peak hours dropped by around 60%.

The Double-Layer Composite came from a different direction. Some clinical departments have tight budgets but the same infection control requirements. Can you strip out material cost without sacrificing bio-safety? We tested five grammages before settling on 37.5 gsm. A 2-ply structure with irradiation sterilization delivers bacterial counts under 5 CFU/g — same as our premium lines — at a meaningfully lower per-pack cost. It's not a compromise product. It's just engineered for a different set of economics.

The Hanging N-Fold was born from a factory visit. In 2022, a Japanese distributor walked through the production floor and pointed at a wall hook. "Can you make one that hangs? One-hand pull. No box." In Japan and parts of Europe, freeing up counter space is literally a line item in hospital tender documents. Nobody outside those markets cared yet, but we could see the question coming.

This one took nearly a year. The core problem: N-fold with crystal embossing caused jamming during continuous pull. Not a material issue — a mold precision issue. We went through four revisions before the feeding stabilized. The final version works with one hand, mounts on bed rails, carts, hooks. The embossed texture does double duty — it adds volume for shelf presence and creates a micro-channel structure that accelerates liquid absorption. A procurement manager from Tokyo emailed us later: "Someone finally understood."

What Makes These Different From What's Already Out There

Raw materials.

Recycled pulp is common in this category because it's cheaper. We don't use it. The result isn't a marketing claim — it's visible. Wipe the probe. No white stuff left on the lens. No need for a second sheet or a cleaning spray.

Bacterial control.

Industry standard allows up to 600 CFU/g. Our QC lab logs under 5 CFU/g per batch. Not a theoretical number — the actual test result before every shipment. Reports available on request. This isn't about being better on a data sheet. It's about a product that touches broken skin, surgical sites, and sensitive imaging surfaces.

Category thinking.

Most factories offer one or two ultrasound wipes based on sheet size. We built four based on usage patterns: high-frequency, standard clinical, budget-sensitive, and space-constrained. Each line has its own grammage, ply count, and packaging logic. The point isn't more SKUs. The point is you don't have to force one product to solve every problem in your department.

Sterilization flexibility.

Gamma irradiation, ethylene oxide, high-temperature — all three are in production. Middle Eastern buyers often take gamma because the vacuum packaging handles humid transit conditions better. European buyers frequently request EO because their import standards include additional tests for irradiation residue. We didn't build three sterilization methods because we felt like it. Different regulatory environments demand different things.

Custom work — real custom work.

Sheet dimensions from 200 to 300mm, grammage from 45 to 80 gsm. Packaging with bilingual, Arabic, or Spanish labeling. Individual aluminum foil wrapping for tropical markets. Blank white-label packs for distributors who print their own labels locally. Smallest OEM run: 500 packs for an Eastern European startup testing the waters. Largest: a 40-foot container with three variants mixed, delivered to the Middle East in six weeks.

The Short Version

We spent six years on this because a Nigerian distributor held up a contaminated sheet and asked a reasonable question. Four products sounds like a lot until you realize each one exists because someone, somewhere, described a problem specific enough that a generic wipe couldn't solve it.

No lint is table stakes. Under 5 CFU/g is the minimum we ship. What actually makes these products useful is simpler: they solve the thing that was annoying your sonographer at 3 PM today.
